The University Church – a new faith community in Toledo, Ohio – partners with Toledo Campus Ministry to host a weekly theology discussion group known as “Table Talk” (with a passing nod to Martin Luther). We gather every Thursday from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. at “The Ark”, a building located on the property of The Interfaith Center, immediately adjacent to the campus of The University of Toledo. We encourage as many voices as possible to gather around the table, drink coffee, eat cookies, and talk about theology. In recent weeks we have had Protestant, Catholic and Muslim voices sharing thoughts together on a variety of topics. One of the aims of this blog is to keep some of these thoughts recorded and perhaps to continue discussion between gatherings.
This isn’t an electronic theology text and it isn’t intended to present just one opinion. It is simply one person’s record of what he understood to be some of the major points raised during discussion. Often questions are raised for which we have no good answers (and every now and again we hear answers to which there appear to be no good questions attached). Such is the way of open conversation. Feel free to join in.
We should have blogs for some of our more major tangential discussions. I’m thinking particularly of last week on the issue of finances. I thought Brad laid down a serious challenge regarding following Jesus and the need to sell all of ones possessions in order to follow Jesus. I’ve done a bit of looking on the topic and some things could be highlighted to shed doubt on the necessity of that idea.
That’s a good idea Brad – I had been trying to keep the main idea of each conversation as the subject of each blog entry but allowing the focus to drift over to these more tangential areas might be good. Certainly last week’s talk about money was interesting and provoking!
