Growing Food, Growing Awareness, and Growing Compassion.
Even though The University Church’s Community Garden may have appeared dormant and brown over the long, cold winter months, you may be surprised to learn that huge growth has taken place.
Over the years, our Community Gardeners have been a loose association of like-minded gardeners who worked independently (and occasionally corporately) to grow food. As more and more individuals started to participate in the Community Garden, it became obvious that it was time to organize. Through the leadership of our VISTA members and the Community Gardeners themselves, something NEW has emerged: The Community Garden Leadership Team.
Founded in the winter months of 2019, the Community Garden Leadership Team is the grassroots, volunteer led, governing body appointed by the Community Gardeners. The Leadership Team is co-chaired by Bryan and Cassie with other members serving in such roles as Plot Leaders and Church Liaisons. Events such as Community Garden potlucks, garden work days, and planning meetings are beginning to form; led by our fearless team of volunteer leaders.
The Community Garden Leadership Team hopes to improve communication among gardeners, offer resources and support to improve the gardening experience at TUC Garden, and build a strong community that feels known and empowered to tackle their goal of fighting hunger in our community.
Singularly, a gardener can grow plenty of food. But together, a supportive community of gardeners can grow friendship, knowledge, and support, as well as enough food to make a big difference in the lives of our neighbors in need.
We are so thankful for all of the gardeners who willingly stepped up to lead and to help us move into this new and exciting phase of the life for our Community Garden.
